Taking time for yourself – 8 ways

It is important to remember that you need to take care of yourself and dedicate a part of your day just for you. For me, I really only have a few minutes in my day that I can dedicate just to me. I treasure these minutes. They help me reboot and recharge my system. Here are 8 ways that help me find time in my day for some “ME TIME”

Stay up or wake up

Get up 20 minutes earlier or go to bed 20 minutes earlier and do something that is just about you! Reading, fitness, learning a new skill etc… I have recently been getting up a bit early each day and it feels wonderful. It’s nice to get up before my babies and have a little me time. I make some hot water and add a little lemon. I sip on that for a few minutes, catch up on emails and get ready for the day!

Upgrade Your Daily Shower

Guys, this is me ultimate ME time! For me, bathing really is the ultimate “me time”. Add bubbles or aromatherapy and get a shower radio to play some favourite tunes, and really relax. Long and leisurely is great, but whether under the shower or in the tub, even 20 minutes is enough to feel luxurious. I love using bath oils to help sooth and relax me! Since being pregnant, my back has been killing me, so lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus have been great additions to my baths!

Journal

Write down your feelings, stresses, ideas, dreams – whatever strikes your fancy. It doesn’t have to be a regular thing to feel good or serve a purpose, so don’t worry if it’s only one time or very sporadic. Keep a small notebook with you, and reach for it instead of your mobile phone when feeling bored.

Unplug

Ban all electronics, social media, email and phone calls for a set amount of time, and instead read a book or magazine, go for a walk, or simply stare out the window and daydream. Squeeze this one in while having your morning coffee, while on a subway commute or cab ride, or on a Saturday afternoon between errands.

Clear Your Head

Meditate, get your yoga on, watch an episode of Friends, or play some upbeat tunes and dance dance dance! Find what works for you, and a time of day that you can be totally alone (early mornings are a good bet), and just completely let go for as many minutes as you have.

Exercise

Get outside for a run or walk, take a group class, or hit the gym with friends or alone and enjoy a nice sweat.  Trouble finding time? Your health is a priority, so feel no guilt scheduling exercise into your daily routine. Find an activity you love, and then the “me time” effect is a bonus.

Treat Yourself

Anyone else getting bored of eating your kids stale goldfish and sticky fruit snacks? Treat yourself to something super yummy and enjoy every minute of it. Hot chocolate, green tea, ice cream, fresh fruit with whipped cream, whatever tickles your fancy.

Take a nap

Have a sweet snooze, for a few minutes! This is a game changer for me! It feels so good to be able to rest your eyes for a minute and take a few breaths. So relaxing and helps give me a second wind throughout the day.
