Why I love to layer

Layering is something that I feel like is so overlooked. I am the biggest proponent for all things layers. I’ve loved to layer since I was a little girl. I’m not sure if it’s because I am super indecisive on what to wear or because of the fact that I am always freezing cold and need an extra layer at all times. It’s neither here nor there. I want to share some of my secrets to layering. It can either really amp up your look or make you never want to try layering ever again. Here are 5 five rules to layering!

1. Compliment your Colors

Layering will work best if you focus on 2-3 colors in you whole outfit. This isn’t time to put every color you have in your closet on! A print is always so cute and a great way to add some flair to your outfit. When layering, limit your prints to one. In this case, I started with a basic white tee, I started with a neutral/minimal color and then built up to the striped colorful sweater. Pairing colors like blue and camel compliment each other nicely, other great color combos for fall: burgundy and green, navy and mustard, black and tan. Camel is one of my favorite colors to wear during fall. I love the way it looks with my dark hair, so it makes it one of my go to’s for the season.

2. Remember Fabrics we’re not all Created Equal

If you attempted to layer a sweater on a sweater and you’re wondering why on earth layering just isn’t working out for you… THAT IS WHY. The thickness and texture of fabric can make or break your layering experience. I paired this more chunky sweater with a very light cotton t-shirt. It doesn’t give me anymore added bulk, which can be super easy when layering. I am a huge lover of all the cami tops in the world!! 4. Keep it “Bulk Free”

As previously stated, bulk on bulk is a big time no-no. You’ll end up with a result similar to Ralphie’s brother off of a Christmas Story when he “Can’t get up!” Start with a thin light layer, maybe pair it with a sweater or loose top and then throw on a jacket to tie it all together. Layers are meant to compliment each other, and you! TYou can add the bulkiest item of your layers as the first layer and pair it with a slimmer jacket. I’ve done that in the past and it does work. Keep in mind to stick to 2-3 layers. More than that will be a little overkill! Don’t forget about bottoms, this counts towards the bulk! I choose to opt-in for a slimmer denim that compliments my top layers.

3. Start With the End Look in Mind

What does this mean? Well, get some inspiration of how to layer off of my blog of Pinterest! It can be so frustrating when you don’t have a clue of how to layer. Make it simple and follow these steps. ALways remember to start thin and bulk it up with the last few layers. If you’re new to layering, finding an inspiration photo is exactly the way to go. This is how I figured out the secrets to layering.

5. Have Fun With It

Most of all, have fun with it! No one is the master of layering so who knows, you could be the next person to write the rules on layers. Here is one of my all-time favorite ways to layer, a lace cami top, basic white tee, paired with a slouchy cardigan. It’s super simple but always looks Pinterest worthy at the end. Have fun, be creative and work those layers!
